One of the biggest skincare trends in 2017 was the epic rise in popularity for clay face masks. Ranging from all colors and types of masks, every instagramer or beauty blogger has drenched themselves in the numerous benefits with a variety of products. So why are clay masks so good? What are the possible benefits from using clay masks? What skin type is best for clay masking?

Clay masks have a long legacy. Clay essentially is a product weathered by volcanic ash and is unique to their source of origin. Different clays can have an abundance of different minerals including calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper iron and potassium, to name a few. Their origin and composition also depicts the color. Some clays like Kaolin is usually white to pink in color while others like Cambrian clay are blue in color or Rhassoul which is usually a warm brown color. Each distinct clay is has its own benefits and uses for the human body.

The use for clay beauty treatments started in Ancient Greece around 372-287 BCE. This ancient civilization encompassed their culture around the discovery of the benefits from minerals around Aegean Sea. First coined by Aristotle around 320 BCE, he claimed that “eating of the earth” was both a religious and therapeutic ritual. Clay perpetuated as a defining feature in Ancient Greek culture. The beauty treatmentment we know and love today was born. Mud/clay baths, clay facial masks and hair treatments were born in the ancient spas of greek culture. So how did such an ancient tradition keep in the modern times?

Clay masks are perfect for unbalanced skin. They help normalize the production of sebum (oil) to help decongest pores. As we may know, unbalanced oil production can lead to an abundance of black and white heads. As a spot treatment, clay masks can help draw up deep rooted cystic acne up to the surface for easy extraction or help speed up their healing process. The astringent properties in clay masks can help tone and tighten pores leaving a more flawless finish to the skin. In the wet phase of application, the detoxifying benefits start to do their heavy lifting. Clay has a negative charge and most toxins in the body have a positive ionic charge, which is attracted the the mask itself allowing the skin to absorb the abundance of minerals. During the drying phase of the mask, the mask starts pulling hydrogen from the skin improving the circulation of oxygen and exercises the capillaries to stimulate blood flow. Clay masks are also gentle exfoliation treatments that keep the lipid barrier intact, great for daily detoxifying benefits. No wonder why clay masks are still a staple in the skincare industry.
